Ironically, the very premise is why Scully canceled The Simpsons’ planned Santa Claus plot.īeing a hugely influential sitcom, The Simpsons is watched by people of all ages, including children. Scully gave an example of one of the tactics Marge uses to preserve the secret of Santa Claus, saying there would be calls ' to the North Pole, so a phone bill comes in… and Homer’s amazed'. Although he didn’t reveal how the story would have ended, Scully confirmed many of the abandoned Simpsons Christmas episode’s plot beats were developed. The family was to have spent several years keeping up the ruse to protect Homer’s sense of childlike wonder. Reflecting on ideas that were never produced, Scully revealed, ' I still love to this day… We find out that Homer still believes in Santa Claus.' Initially, this idea might sound too cartoonish, but Scully explained that he felt Homer Simpson was probably the only character on TV with whom you could get away with the story. Scully recalled how ' Marge Be Not Proud' was inspired by his own experience of shoplifting, and revealed it was not the only Christmas story he had planned.
